Motorcycle sales were twice in numbers as compared to scooters segment, but popular scooter models still gave a competitive run for money, when it’s comes to sales volume; especially by “Honda Activa”, which ranked 2nd best-selling two wheeler across all segments, only behind “Hero Splendor” motorcycle.
Comparing the overall two-wheelers sales figure of last two Fiscal years (FY2018-19 & FY2019-20), it’s evident that Indians prefer both scooters and motorcycles, almost equally; they just have to suit their need and pocket.
In the fiscal year 2019-20, Maruti Suzuki emerged as the industry leader w.r.t sales volume in India. With 14,85,940 unit of cars sold, Maruti Suzuki remains the most popular car brand amongst Indian consumer. We will shortly look into some of its popular brands that were sold like hot cakes.
But first also look into, how its competitiors did in FY19. Hyundai was the next car manufacturer in the list with 5,10,260 unit of cars sold; while Mahindra ranked third with 2,19,660 unit of cars sold. Tata (1,52,940), Honda (1,34,740) and Toyota (1,26,700) takes 4th, 5th, 6th place respectively.
Now look at the best selling cars in India for Fiscal Year 2019 in terms of unit sales. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai dominated the top 10 places, leaving no space for other brands. These are the cars that struck the right cord and were successful living up to the expectation of Indian customer in terms of price, features and novelty.
With over 18 million units sold, India, remains the largest market for two wheeler automobiles. Evaluating the country’s preference w.r.t CC-Class segmentation, then 51-125cc range segment is by far the market leader with around 70% of the total units sale, followed by the 126-250cc at around 25%.
The sales figure in the country declined from FY18 to FY19, and with around 17 % decline in motorcycle and scooters segment during FY19-20 v/s FY19-18, the situation seems bleak than ever.
Though the figures have dropped drastically from 7.6 Million units sold during FY2018-2019, Hero motocorp still leads the sales figure with around 6.2 million two wheelers sold in FY2019-2020.
India is the largest market of two wheeler in the world, especially in the CC-Class segmentation (51-125cc); which is 70 % of the overall two wheeler market.
Indian two-wheeler market that was 21.19 million in sales volume in 2019, is forecasted to expand up to approx. 25 million units by 2024.
